Handel's Messiah

Messiah (HWV 56), is an oratorio by George Frideric Handel based on a libretto by Charles Jennens. Composed in the summer of 1741 and premiered in Dublin on the 13 April 1742, Messiah is Handel's most famous creation and is among the most popular works in the Western choral literature.


19th Annual Paul Robeson Vocal Competition
November 18th, 2007

Each year vocalists compete before a panel of music judges in order to win attention and prize money that moves them forward in their careers as vocalists. The Finals of the 19th annual Paul Robeson Vocal Competition will take place Sunday at 4:00 PM at Universalist National Memorial Church in Northeast Washington DC. Final Contestants will be chosen from the group of semi-finalists who will have competed the day before.

MESSIAH SING-IN

Sing along in some of the greatest choruses of Western Music .

The Society will present a SING-IN of the first (Christmas) section of Handel's great work, MESSIAH At the end of the first section we will sing his wonderful HALLELUJAH chorus. The SING-IN will take place at The Westminster Presbyterian Church, 400 I Street SW (two blocks from the Waterfront stop on the Green Line) at 7:00 PM. COME EARLY to get a place in this small but very warm church.

This SING-IN is FREE and open to whomever wants to get in the middle of the joy of some of our greatest and most popular choral music . COME ON OUT! BRING YOUR OWN SCORE!--We have scores if you don't!!!

This is the Society's first SING-IN and is done in partnership with The Metropolitan Arts Patrons. Darrold Hunt will conduct and Doctor Lester Green will be the accompianst..

The SING-IN is FREE and a free will offering will be taken to help support its cost. Please pass this on to your friends and others you think will enjoy singing along so that we can ALL GET TOGETHER AND ENJOY!!


17th Paul Robeson Vocal Competition

A Competition for vocalists ready to enter a professional career. The FINALS of the 17th Annual PAUL ROBESON VOCAL COMPETITION will take place November 11th and 12 in Washington, DC at the Westminster Presbyterian Church 400 I Street Southwest..

The FINALS will occur at 4:00 PM and a $20.00 contribution will be requested.

This will be the fifteenth annual Paul Robeson Vocal Competition and it has achieved international status with contestants entering from around the world.

Series Members of The Urban Philharmonic Players. Raycurt Johnson a talented violinist born and raised in Washington, DC and gifted pianist Naoko Maeda a native of Japan will perform. This recital will take place at 7:00 PM in the Great Hall of the Charles Sumner School which is located at 17th and M Streets in Northwest Washington.

Enjoy these artists who are member of the Urban Philharmonic Players who are representative of the mature and growing talent which is here in our Washington Community. They will be performing works of Mozart and Chopin, among others.

Come on out for a quiet evening of beautiful music and bring your friends. There is no charge for this concert, although a donation of $5.00 will be greatly appreciated.

This young and gifted artist will perform musical gems from Bach and Schubert to Belini and Debussy.

Also included in his program will be works of Haitian composers and from the Haitian Community.

Maestro Solomon Sparrow will open the 2004 Recital Series of the Urban Philharmonic Society. The recital will take place at 7:00PM in the main auditorium of the Charles Sumner School. The School is located at 1202 Seventeenth Street NW, Washington DC

Maestro Sparrow will conduct choral artists primarily from the Vermont Avenue Baptist Church.

There is no charge for admission.

The Urban Philharmonic Society is proud to offer as part of its Recital Series an annual platform where highly gifted choir directors from throughout the Greater Washington Community can be both spotlighted and celebrated.

Monthly Recital Series. This first concert begins a Series which will be presented the third Thursday of each month.

Negotiations are in place with the Charles Sumner School in Northwest Washington (for the third Thursday) as well as the Alexandria Museum of Black History and Art in Alexandrai, Virginia and the Anacostia Museum in Southeast Washington for presentations on dates which surround the third Thursday.

Artists including minority or disabled performers, are being chosen from around the United States will be announced shortly.

Soprano Andrea Duplechain will open a monthly recital series which the Urban Philharmonic Society will present in cooperation with Mimi's Bistro "The Singing Restaurant". Generally, on the third Tuesday of each month, artists will be presented in evening recitals. Throughout the season a large number of highly talented vocalists will be presented however the Series will also include solo instrumentalists as well as instrumental and vocal ensembles. Although there is no admission fee, food and drink are available for purchase.

The Recital Series will occur monthly at the Sumner School and present,among others, the highly gifted pianist/composer Haskell Small, The Urban Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble conducted by Darrold Hunt, artists presented in cooperation with Very Special Arts as well as with Sphinx Competition. Concerts will generally take place the Third Thursday. Winner of the 2001 Paul Robeson Vocal Competition, Ms. Cooper has performed with the Washington Opera as well as throughout the Washington area.
